What to Expect at Your Massage Appointment
So, you’re about to receive your first session at CC Rehabilitative Massage Therapy, how should you prepare?
Food: In general, it is a good idea to avoid eating a heavy meal and drinking high amounts of caffeine or alcohol before your massage session. Doing such can negatively impact how your body reacts to the massage and can lead to nausea and stomach discomfort.
Water: Hydration before your appointment is extremely important. Water is the magic behind making your muscles function properly and repairing themselves post massage. Water transports essential nutrients and electrolytes to your muscles allowing them to contract! Massage also helps increase the flow of the lymphatic and circulatory system through manipulation of the muscles and without water these systems cannot efficiently pick up metabolic waste.
How will the massage session go?
Each massage begins with your massage therapist discussing your past medical history, lifestyle and current concerns with you in a private office.
Your massage therapist will go over a brief overview of how the massage will be administered, how to disrobe and instruct you how to get onto the table and drape yourself with the table covering. Once you are ready to get undressed your massage therapist will leave the room and knock before they reenter the room. You can leave your undergarments on or off depending on your level of comfort. All private areas stay covered during your massage.
A full body massage will include the back, legs, arms, neck, feet and head. Depending on the level of tension you are experiencing, a full body massage may not be feasible with an hour massage. It is important to keep an open dialogue about what areas you are most concerned about so your therapist can prioritize those.
Will it be painful?
Our clients generally describe the pain during their massage as a “good pain”. It is a sensation that may be uncomfortable, but you are able to breathe through it and keep your body relaxed. If at any point during your massage you are uncomfortable with the pressure or technique being used, please tell your therapist so they can adjust.
Do people fall asleep?
All the time! We know we are doing a great job if we hear you snoring. It is nothing to be embarrassed about as it is a sign that your body is relaxed and releasing tension.
When your massage is finished.
When your massage appointment ends your massage therapist will gently tell you that massage session is over and instruct you to take your time getting dressed. When you are finished dressing you can open the treatment room door and take a seat. Your massage therapist will go over what they found during their session and form a treatment plan with you. The massage therapist may suggest some at home treatment to help the results of your massage last.
It is important to drink plenty of water after your massage for the same reasons listed above.
